How to answer “reason for job change”

Last updated: 11 October 2026

The reason-for-change question asks why you want to leave your current job (or why you left your last one), usually in a short text box.

Forms ask it as: Why are you looking for a change?

How forms ask it

  • A short text box: “Reason for job change”, “Reason for leaving” or “Why are you looking for a change?”.
  • Sometimes a list of choices, such as career growth, relocation or company closure.

How to answer it

  • Keep it to one or two true sentences.
  • Say what you want next: a bigger role, a new domain, a different city, more stable hours.
  • Stay neutral about your current employer and colleagues.
  • If your company closed or your role was made redundant, say that plainly.

How Ezy Agent answers it

Save your own wording once in Saved answers and Ezy Agent reuses it; your saved answer always wins. Without one, Ezy Agent may draft an answer from your profile and the form, which you see before anything is sent when Review is on.

Questions

Is “better salary” an acceptable reason?

It can be true, but on a form it reads better as part of growth: a bigger role or more responsibility.

Should I mention problems at my current job?

Keep it neutral; describe what you are moving towards rather than what you are leaving.

What if I was laid off?

Say so in plain words, for example that your role was made redundant in a restructuring.
